Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry at Covington Dental Studio

It is highly common to experience anxiety surrounding dental procedures. You’re not alone if you find yourself putting off important dental work due to fear of the process. Luckily, there are plenty of solutions to help patients like you through essential dental work. One of these solutions is sedation dentistry.

At Covington Dental Studio, your comfort is our priority. If you have an important dental procedure you’re feeling uneasy about, sedation dentistry may be an option for you. We proudly serve the Covington, Alcovy, Social Circle and Oxford communities with affordable dental services you can trust.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is used during dental services ranging from more common treatments to considerably extensive procedures. During most forms of sedation, you will still be awake. It ranges from minimal, moderate or deep. Deep sedation and general anesthesia do render patients unconscious for the duration of the procedure, but most forms of sedation simply numb your mouth to ensure comfort. Sedation dentistry is used for procedures like fillings, dental crowns, dental implants, veneers and more. Most patients are able to receive sedation dentistry, but it is especially recommended for patients who have a low pain tolerance, sensitive teeth, dental anxiety or a bad gag reflex. Longer amounts of invasive dental work are also cause for sedation.

Types of Dental Sedation

At Covington Dental Studio, we offer three different types of dental sedation, so together with your dentist you can decide which option is right for you:

Inhaled Minimal Sedation

Inhaled minimal sedation is a form of nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas. This is administered simply by placing a mask over your nose as you breathe in normally. This form of sedation should leave you feeling aware but relaxed, and you should be able to drive yourself home afterwards.

Oral Sedation

Ranging from minimal to moderate strength, oral sedation is taken by mouth about an hour before your appointment. The dosage will be prescribed by your dentist. Oral sedation is used to make you feel sleepy and groggy for your procedure. You will still be awake through oral surgery, but you will not be aware of your surroundings. This type of sedation wears off slower than nitrous oxide but faster than deep IV sedation.
