How Do I Get One?

Whether you’re getting an inlay or an onlay, the process looks very similar. First, your mouth will be numbed with local anesthetic so your dentist can remove existing decay from the tooth. Then, impressions of your tooth will be taken and sent to a lab. It will take about a week to receive your inlay or onlay. In the meantime, you’ll be sent home with a temporary filling before returning to our office for the permanent restoration. The entire procedure typically requires only two appointments.

What Are They Made Of?

Inlays and onlays are both either made of composite materials or porcelain. Porcelain is the strongest and most common option, but either one will be more durable than traditional fillings. While an inlay acts similar to a filling, onlays act similar to crowns, or “partial” crowns, as the material lays over top of the teeth. This material will be bonded into place after we remove the area of decay. Filling in this newly cleaned area allows us to protect the structure of the tooth and prevent future problems.
