What Is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are caps that sit on your teeth to correct damage. Often made of gold, palladium, nickel or chromium, metal crowns are known for being the strongest. However, crowns can also be made of porcelain, resin or ceramic material. Each of these offer their own pros and cons, such as higher or lower visibility and less or more strength. A dental crown exists as a reinforcement for the tooth, aiming to strengthen your tooth, improve appearance, and keep the tooth healthy after initial damage. It can often be considered both a cosmetic and restorative dental service because of the various benefits to both the look and function of the tooth.

Getting a Dental Crown

Getting a dental crown takes a couple of visits to Covington Dental Studio. First, X-rays of your tooth and the surrounding bone will be taken to see if there is any existing decay, cracks or fractures in the tooth. If so, your dentist may opt for a root canal before administering your dental crown. When the tooth is clean, your dentist will file and shape your tooth to fit the crown. Then, an impression of your tooth will be made and sent to a lab. A temporary crown will be put in place until the official crown is made. This can take up to two weeks.

Placing the Dental Crown

When we receive your permanent, custom made crown from the lab, your dentist will first remove your temporary crown. They will then ensure your crown matches the desired shape and color of your natural tooth. If everything looks correct, you will be given a local anesthetic before the crown is put into place. You shouldn’t experience any pain through this process.

After Placement

Some sensitivity may occur after crown placement, but it shouldn’t be severe or last longer than a couple of days. Your new dental crown should last you an average of ten years at least, but don’t hesitate to contact your dentist if you’re having concerns about your crown. Try to limit teeth grinding, chewing ice, and other actions that are hard on the surfaces of your teeth. Otherwise, continue your dental care like usual. Routine visits are an important part of continued upkeep of your teeth.
